‘Magic Dirt’ Ceramics Show Opens January 15

The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries at Old Dominion University will present Magic Dirt, a national juried exhibition showcasing contemporary ceramics sculpture, January 15–February 20, with an opening reception on Saturday, Saturday, January 15. The show, which is free and open to the public.

The show’s jurors, Juan Granados, Associate Professor of Art at Texas Tech University, and Richard Nickel, Associate Professor of Art Education at ODU, designed the exhibit to showcase innovative contemporary ceramics sculpture and functional forms. With Magic Dirt they were looking for personal and artistic narratives through the medium of ceramics.

“We wanted works that spoke eloquently about the artists’ abilities to communicate their artistic visions and statements through the use of ceramics and in some cases mixed media,” Granados and Nickel said in a joint statement. “Ultimately we chose artworks that were impressive examples of artists communicating with visual interplay in media, commentary, social and political awareness, humor and a range of aesthetic exploration. Overall, we believe the exhibition presents wonderful and excellent examples of personal artistic narratives in ceramics.”

The Gordon Galleries are located at 4509 Monarch Way, between 45th and 46th streets. For more information call 683-6271 or visit http://al.odu.edu/art/gallery/index.php.

Richard Nickel in 100 TEAPOTS V at Baltimore Clayworks

Art Education professor Richard Nickel was recently juried in the  into 100 TEAPOTS at Baltimore Clayworks The exhibition was juried by Nick Joerling a full-time studio potter who has maintained a studio in Penland, North Carolina  since the early 80′s. He received a B.A. in History from the University of Dayton, Ohio, and an M.F.A. in Ceramics from Louisiana State University in 1986.
Jurors Statement: My dictionary says a teapot is “A covered pot with a spout.” I smile at the judiciousness of that definition, like characterizing a human being as an upright body with a face. Buried in both succinct summations is the rich unending variety of mechanics, spirit, aesthetics, emotion, intellect. I like the blue-collar aspect of pots, that they do the every day work of carrying, containing, delivering, but can also “step out” and stimulate the mind and imagination. I like the pots that make good use of the constraints of utility, and I like the pots that push against those boundaries: pots that entertain some dicey possibilities. In my own studio I hope for pots that have qualities of sensuality, empathy, humor and risk.
100 Teapots V will be featured in the Baltimore Clayworks Exhibition Gallery from January 15–February 27, 2011
The opening reception will be Saturday, January 15, 2011, 6:00–8:00PM
