
Visual Studies graduate student Crystal Johnson has been awarded the Joseph Gilliard Ceramics Award in the New Power Generation exhibit at the Hampton University Museum. Titled Sick and Tired, the sculpture is one of 43 contemporary artworks by African-American artists that will be on view through July 26. New Power Generation features 42 pieces by 23 artists who work as educators, graphic designers, architects and practicing artists both in the local area and around the country. The show was juried by Napoleon Jones-Henderson, professor of art at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. and executive director of the Research Institute of African and African Diaspora Arts Inc. in Roxbury, Mass. In addition to her studies in the NSU/ODU Joint Program, Crystal also teaches art for Newport News Public Schools.

I am so encouraged by this work. I just ran across this pic and just wanted to encourage my sister to continue creating images the depict all of our emotional states at one time or another. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your gift.
